The Duffin Creek WPCP is a conventional activated sludge plant that provides treatment of wastewater and sewage sludge received from the Regional Municipality of York and the Regional Municipality of Durham. The Stage 3 expansion program is meant to increase capacity at the plant to 630 ML/day. It addresses forecasted population growth and updated treatment regulations.
This project was a solids processing expansion, consisting of new dewatering and incineration facilities. The dewatering building is LEED® Gold certified and is the largest LEED® certified building built at a WPCP in Ontario, at the time. The fluidized bed incinerators were the largest supplied in the world using a hot windbox with a refractory arch distributor.
The dewatering building included solids receiving, centrifuges, odour control and related conveyance equipment. The incineration building consists of two incineration trains, waste heat recovery systems, and an ash loading facility.
